Erected in 1937 on Fifth Avenue as part of Rockefeller Center, Lee Lawrie's two-ton statue of Atlas rises 45 feet into the air. On the shoulder of the giant is an armillary sphere (a skeletal celestial sphere), which rests on a curved beam bearing the symbols of the planets (all except Pluto). The magnificent bronze Art Deco statue remains a prominent and important tourist destination.
