The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was an organization of veterans of the Union Army, Navy and Marines who served in the Civil War. Their annual reunions were attended by thousands of veterans between 1866 and 1951; The 1883 reunion, from July 25th-26th was the Seventeenth National GAR Encampment. The Colorado Springs Daily Gazette from Sunday July 22nd of that year stated, "Every incoming train-today was loaded down with veterans, who come to participate in the grand reunion and encampment of the Grand Army which begins Tuesday next."
