In 1896, the Dutch-American Steamship Company officially adopted the name "Holland America Line," which is printed on the building in the background of this poster. This event, combined with the company adding yellow to the funnels of their ships around 1900, allow us to date this poster to around 1899. The Rotterdam was actually the third ship in their fleet to bear that name, which was changed when she was sold to the Scandinavian Line in 1906.
