JAMESTOWN TER - CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION / NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. 1907.

31¾x41½ inches, 80½x105½ cm. A. Hoen & Co., Richmond.
Condition A-: expert overpainting in margins and around text; minor creases in image.

A poster commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown and the Virginia colony by English settlers. Held in Norfolk, the event placed a greater emphasis on athletics and military successes, featuring a Naval parade, whereas previous fairs and expositions had touted progress in arts and technology. "A day after it closed, the New York Times called the Jamestown Ter-Centennial 'the most colossal failure in the history of exhibitions' and reminded its readers that the fair's board still owed the government $900,000 on its million-dollar loan" (https://encyclopediavirginia.org/).
