DESIGNER UNKNOWN LA LANTERNE LITTÉRAIRE.
51 1/2x37 1/2 inches, 131x96 cm. Émile Levy, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses along upper edge; repaired tears through margins, some affecting text; unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds.
La Lanterne was a radical-socialist daily newspaper that was very influential between 1899 and 1914. They also published an illustrated supplement with a less political theme. Emile Lévy was prolific Parisian printer who primarily designed posters for theatres and performers. In this case, however, he is promoting the supplement through an intriguing graphic concept. The lovely young reader, sitting in a park, is coming out of her dress, under the watchful and appreciative eye of a statue, at her feet, the lantern, from which the newspaper takes it name. Fit to Print 194.
