DESIGNER UNKNOWN LEND YOUR MONEY TO YOUR GOVERNMENT / SECOND LIBERTY LOAN OF 1917.
33 3/4x45 1/4 inches, 85 3/4x115 cm. [American Lithographing Co., New York.]
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; creases and abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds and in margins and image; trimmed.
An exceptional rendering of the Treasury building in Washington D.C., which in 1917 was still surrounded by unpaved roads. Unlike other bond posters, this image makes the clear explanation that the "U.S. Treasury will pay you interest every six months." Rawls attributes this as an attempt to educate the American public, most of whom were innocent in the ways of high finance and to whom "bonds were something quite new" and who would often ask when they had to make interest payments! (Rawls p. 196). Theofiles 130.
