From the early years of posters in the 1890s, newspapers have used the pictorial medium as a way of bolstering sales. Through the 1960s and 1970s The Times of London, The New York Times, The Village Voice and other broadsheets have used humor and poignant images to draw attention to their publications. Here, in an anonymous image from South Africa, photomontage is the medium of choice. The artist has placed the bullet-ridden, beleaguered newspaper behind barbed wired, as if truth itself was imprisoned, implying that no matter how hard the times are, The Times will deliver the truth and not "approximations to the truth."
