Advertising travel from America's Northeast to Italy, the designer chose one of Italy's most dramatic and recognizable landmarks, Mount Vesuvius, in Naples, as the focal point for his image. The White Star Line ran winter cruises to Italy in the years prior to the First World War, employing the two-funneled sister ships Adriatic, Baltic and Celtic on the run (one of which is depicted here entering the Bay of Naples).
