Following the Bolshevik Revolution, revolutionary movements sprung up in Germany. "When the war finally came, [Germany's expressionist artists] pointed the way to a new involvement of the artist in political affairs and demonstrated the power of graphic arts to affect opinion" (Word & Image p. 22). Here, workers are called upon to celebrate the revolution, joining their fellows already marching and waving red flags against the silhouettes of factories.
