An American Navy recruitment poster either based on or the model for the famous British poster by Partridge, Take up the Sword of Justice. Rising from the water, clad in red, white and blue, and a dress like a wave, Columbia, raises her fist and her sword in anger at the sinking ship and drowning people around her. The image represents the sinking of the Lusitania, in which 1200 people died, triggering outrage among Americans at the targeting of civilians by German U-boats. Borkan p. 30, IWM I p. 71.
