The Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen have been squaring off against each other on the gridiron since 1890. "The Pennsylvania [Railroad] often boasted of its day-in, day-out ability to carry one out of every five railroad passengers in America, but it was also capable of meeting extraordinary short-term demands for service. . . [the most enormous of which was] the task of mobilizing the single most concentrated movement of special passenger trains in the nation - carrying students, athletes, alumni, and fans to Philadelphia each autumn for the Army-Navy collegiate football game . . . in the early 1950s PRR carried between 20,000 and 30,000 passengers to and from each game aboard 25 to 30 trains, requiring some 400 coaches" (Teller p. 138). Navy decisively won this match, 42-7.
