The travel industry meets Hollywood in this cross-promotional piece, in which the Union Pacific Railroad helps advertise a Fox movie. The Big Trail was John Wayne's first leading role. The expensive, shot-on-location movie was a big flop, and Wayne didn't break through to stardom until Stagecoach, nine years later. Most likely this image of a modern powerful locomotive, juxtaposed with an old-fashioned wagon-train, did far more to promote travel on the railroad than fill seats in theatres.
