Released in 1932, The Mummy followed closely on the heels of Boris Karloff's success with Frankenstein the previous year. Released in Palestine in 1933, a local artist used linoleum blocks to recreate the image used on the Hollywood poster, which features Karloff as the mummified Egyptian high priest Imhotep and a horrified Zita Johann. A success at the box office in the West, the movie did not fare as well in the Middle East, and allegedly only one print of the film was imported.
