A poster for the first of three film and one musical adaptations of The Streets of New York, originally a French melodrama, Les Pauvres de Paris (1856), transposed into a New York play. The American version of the story revolves around a middle-class family, newly impoverished by the financial panic of 1857, struggling to survive against a villainous banker.
