"More than a government agency, DIVEDCO was a social and cultural experiment that aimed to reach the masses, especially in remote areas of the island. . . [the movies, books and posters they created] were vehicles for educating Puerto Ricans about democracy, values, civic duty, hygiene and nutrition. They also became aesthetic and social documents about a rural way of life, which was rapidly disappearing" (Smithsonian, "Posters from the Division of Community Education --DIVEDCO-- of Puerto Rico, 1949-1989," press release, Sept 17, 2008). DIVEDCO also worked as an incubator for some of the best Puerto Rican artists and designers. For the movie "Una Voz en la Montaña" (A Voice in the Mountain), the anonymous artist uses a simple typographic conceit to express the theme of the film; the difficulty of everyday life of Puerto Rican communities throughout the 1950s.
