Intourist was founded in 1929 for the purpose of facilitating foreign visits to the Soviet Union. This state-controlled tourism served the dual purpose of propagating the myth of socialism and the Soviet way of life to the outside world, and helping the impoverished Bolshevik government raise much needed foreign currency. Western shipping companies brought tourists to the Soviet Union during this era. The message on the postcard, "This is more than a pleasure trip--It is a voyage into a new world!" is in keeping with the pro-socialist tone which the regime would have been trying to promulgate.
