The White Star line bought two ocean liners from the Dominion Line, to be used on the White Star-Dominion joint service to Canada. The Alberta was renamed Laurentic and the Albany was renamed Megantic. Megantic began its maiden voyage on June 17, 1909, from Liverpool to Montreal, and by 1914 was being used for trooping duties for World War I. After the war ended, the ship was returned to civilian service, and in the off-season, was sent cruising in the West Indies. By 1928, Megantic's regular route was between Great Britain and New York.
