"On New Year's Day 1968, Abbie [Hofmann], Jerry Rubin and Paul Krassner . . . met in Hofmann's apartment. They were lying on pillows on the floor, smoking dope, and, with gales of laughter, talking about their accomplishments the past year and their plans for the coming summer. They believed they were inventing a new form of protest art and that there was no limit to what they could achieve with their audacity and creativity, In a burst of communal inspiration they came up with the idea of Yippie! (The exclamation point was essential, Abbie insisted, in order to convey the excitement of the word's meaning.) Hippies would become Yippies. Yippies were politicized Hippies. Yippies would become members of YIP, the Youth International Party." (Jezer p. 123.) The "New Nation" statement (manifesto) expressed here was intended to become the model of thinking for a whole generation. The group's emblem, a red star and a marijuana leaf represent two of their major priorities, resisting the war in Vietnam and smoking dope.
