Point-of-purchase posters from Ebony and Jet magazines: "Female Impersonators Hold Costume Ball" and "Women Who Pass for Men." Posters on light board, each about 330x250 mm; 13x10 inches; minor wear. No [Johnson Publishing], March [1952] and 28 January 1954.
These posters were displayed at newsstands to promote individual issues of magazines. The full March 1952 issue of Ebony (not offered here) featured an article on Finnie's Ball, a long-running annual Black drag ball in Chicago. The full 28 January 1954 issue of Jet (not offered here) featured a less sympathetic report on "Women Who Pass For Men," describing several examples of trans men and noting that "the problems posed by man-like women are so deep that the public has hardly begun to understand them," but celebrating the "happy ending" of famed singer Gladys Bentley, whose hormone treatments "hastened her return to womanhood."
