Additional Details

This portrait, with the man's head emboldened by a heavy outline, was certainly inspired by the many pre-Columbian sculptures and ceramics Rivera had seen over the years. The drawing was likely pulled from one of Rivera's several sketchbooks. Rivera was known to have carried multiple sketchbooks with him in his jacket pockets and to have sketched anything that caught his attention, especially during his trips to Mexico City. Often a single subject would fill one entire sketchbook. Rivera often inscribed his "Estudios del natural" with notations about the subject or model, colors, and light, as in the present sketch.
