DIEGO RIVERA
Escuela al Aire Libre.

Lithograph, 1932. 317x415 mm; 12 1/2x16 3/8 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 40/100 in pencil, lower margin. A superb, dark and well-inked impression of this extremely scarce lithograph, with all the tonal nuances distinct.

This fresco-like lithograph shows a group of students and a teacher outdoors on horseback standing guard in the background. In Mexico, the Escuelas al Aire Libre movement of the 1920s was a revolutionary project designed to teach art in poor communities, especially indigenous ones. These schools integrated free expression with the concept of art as visual culture. Rivera advocated for them and taught at one of these open air schools.
