DIRK VERRIJK
(Haarlem 1734-1786 The Hague)
A River Scene with a View of Lekkerkerk.

Watercolor and pen and ink on cream laid paper. 165x235 mm; 6 1/2x9 1/4 inches.

Ex-collection Pietro Malenza, with his inscription on his mount (Lugt 2101).

Verrijk trained with his father, the Dutch artist Abraham Verrijk (1708-1769, and by around 1760 began work as an independent, traveling, topographical draftsman. Based on his sketchbooks and detailed drawings, Verrijk worked as an itinerant artist between Brussels and Paris and all parts in between. He is also known as a landscape painter for hand painted wallpaper and as a decorative painter of interiors. His drawings were highly sought after by collectors during his lifetime. In 1774, the auction of the art collection of Antwerp mayor Peeter Frans van Schorel (1761-92) contained at least 28 works by Verrijk and the contemporaneous auction of the collection of Jacob Cramer Sijmonsz from Amsterdam contained some 60 Verrijk works.
