DORA M. BATTY ( 1900-1966) THE UNDERGORUND BRINGS ALL GOOD THINGS NEARER. 1933.
39 3/4x24 3/4 inches, 101x63 cm. The Baynard Press, London.
Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears, creases and minor restoration at edges.
Dora Batty emerged from the London Central School which produced posters for the London City Council Tramway Lines. A large majority of the students there were women. Batty "was one of the most versatile female designers working for the Underground in the interwar period. She was trained in a wide range of disciplines including textile and ceramic design, advertising graphics and book illustration" (Underground p. 78). Here, in her straight-forward Art Deco style, she presents a "classical allusion [employing] Mercury . . . bringing Persephone with her horn of plenty back from the Underworld / Underground." Underground p. 78.
