DORETTE MULLER (1894-?) BAL DES ARTISTES FLOREAL. 1925.
43x31 1/4 inches. Imprimerie Alsacienne, Strassbourg.
Condition B+: expertly restored losses along horizontal fold; restoration in margins.
While nothing is known about Dorette Muller, it seems safe to assume she was a native Alsatiau. The Alsace was historically passed back and forth between German and French hands, and the area reflects the influence of both those large countries. This alluring poster boasts the national colors of both Germany and France. It is an effective, coquettish and seductive image for a ball of floral artists, appropriately delineated in a floral motif. The masked young woman is surrounded by petals as if they were balloons, with a decorative floral pattern behind her. It is well designed, festive and even a little mysterious, but the artistic style is not so much Parisian as it is reminiscent of Munich festival posters from the same era.
