Currently called Varanasi, Benaras is considered one of the most sacred cities in India. Situated on the banks of the holy Ganges River, it is a place for both Hindus and Buddhists to make pilgrimage. Here, a lively and colorful scene along the banks of the Ganges also illustrates a temple in the background with the steps leading down to the river where pilgrims would descend to immerse themselves in the holy water.
