Isipatana (also known as Sarnath) is one of four sites mentioned by the Buddha as adestination for pilgrimages. The Mulagandhakuti Vihara monastery (depicted in white) marks the place where the Buddha spent his first rainy season. The Dhamek Stupa, the circular structure in the background on the right, was constructed in the year 500 to commemorate the Buddha's activities in the area.
