The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports. 48 plates (46 hand-colored lithographs, one hand-colored steel engraving and one uncolored engraving), two engraved vignette title-pages, two engraved portrait frontispieces of Peale and Bartram. 2 volumes (of 3). Quarto, 11 1/4x9 inches, contemporary full tree calf with black morocco spine labels, slightly worn at edges with some scuffing, repaired area on rear cover of volume 1, foot of volume 2 just starting; plates generally clean but with some age toning, few with small marginal tears, occasional offsetting, title page of volume 2 spotted and with vertical crease in margin strengthened on verso, preliminaries and final text leaves of volume 2 turned brown, text with a few tears mostly marginal, two extending into the print, one gathering slightly loose; housed in a custom 1/4 morocco clamshell box. Volumes 1 & 2 as often found. "the first major book issued in the United States to be illustrated with hand-colored lithographic plates" (Reese, Stamped with a National Character 12.) Many plates are after Thomas Doughty, American painter and a founding member of the Hudson River School of artists.
