Additional Details

Thomas James was a preacher in New Bedford. Upon his arrival in 1840 one of his parishioners was Frederick Douglass. Douglass impressed James with his talks to the congregation, and he permitted Douglass to preach. As a lay preacher, Douglass matured into the speaker who would later galvanize American public opinion.
