DOUGLASS RESIGNS FROM COMPANY HEADED FOR SCANDAL DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. Autograph Note Signed, tendering his resignation as Director and President of the Freedom Manufacturing Company, 31/4x7 inches; matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Douglass. Np, circa 1893

Additional Details

The Freedom Manufacturing Company was founded in 1893 to give employment to African-Americans. Douglass was the president and James Hill the vice-president. Among the board members were Walter Thomas and William Wishart, who developed a "confidence game" whereby they sold stock in a company which never really got off the ground. The failure of the company and the exposure of the swindle caused much embarrassment to the well-known black figures who had unwittingly become involved on the board of the company.
