Additional Details

Contains a front-page article by George T. Downing regarding the very contentious issue of the "African Civilization Society" currently being promoted by its president Henry Highland Garnett. The "Society," with the support of many of the old backers (black and white) of the American Colonization Society was advocating the mass emigration, the so-called "return," of American blacks to Africa. Downing refers to Douglass's point-by-point critique of the Society which appeared in a February 1859 issue of Frederick Douglass' Paper. The "Society" is criticized again on page 3 of the present paper, "A Great Crime," by a writer who signs himself "Benj. Banneker." The preposterous idea of a "return" to Africa was made all the more insidious to Douglass by the support of many conservative free blacks.
