Additional Details

this entire issue devoted to "The Speech of the Hon. Charles Sumner on the Bill for the Admission of Kansas as a Free State, in the Senate, June 4, 1860," with an obituary on the death of the noted clergyman and abolitionist Theodore Parker, and an article on the Government's official closing of the Harper's Ferry Investigation. The issue of Kansas and the balance of slave versus free state brought the nation yet closer to the brink of the Civil War. Charles Sumner had been very nearly beaten to death by South Carolina congressman Preston Brooks on the floor of the Senate in 1856 over his speech on the Kansas/Nebraska question.
