In 1872 Frederick Douglass was nominated to run as Vice President on the Victoria Woodhull Equal Rights Party ticket, but instead he decided to campaign for Grant. In this pamphlet Douglass defends Grant's record, not only as a general, but as a president sympathetic to the needs of colored people.
