DOX THRASH (1893 - 1965)
Saturday Night.

Carborundum mezzotint on thin cream wove paper, circa 1944-45. 210x184 mm; 8 1/4x7 1/4 inches, wide margins. Whiting's Textile Bond watermark. Signed in pencil, lower right.

A richly-inked proof with inky finger prints in the margins of this extremely scarce print - unrecorded in Ittmann's catalogue raisonné.

This charming scene is an outstanding example of Dox Thrash's work in carborundum mezzotint. Ittmann notes how this subject of a young woman getting ready for an evening out must have been one of Dox Thrash's most popular. He made versions in a multitude of media: including oil, tempera, etching, carbourundum relief print and woodcut. This is very close in size and composition to the carborundum relief version (see Ittmann 149) except the image is reversed. Itmann pp. 32-33.
