Additional Details

"I hate to sell things to so kind a friend. My own impulse is always to give away the shop. However, I realize that it would not be fair to it, so I sent on your kind order, and told them to add, as a small present from me, Lodge's new book . . . . There is some small tariff but on the other hand the books are cheaper than in America. . . ."
with--Letter from Oscar Slater [convicted of murder but cleared by Doyle] to "Dear Sir" [possibly Doyle], expressing his persecution as he awaits justice: ". . . I think it would not be so very easy for those crooked lot to set me a trap, Sir, . . . my case is the best example of their stupidity. They have sown their seeds--in ruining a man, a stranger in their country and taking advantage of his character and helplessness . . . .
"You have also mentioned something about my patience. Well I have been waiting for solid 19 years, Sir, and so I can still wait patiently longer, but no doubt I would be very, very glad if things came to an end." 2 pages, 4to. Ayr, 24 February 1928.
