DR. SEUSS [THEODOR GEISEL].
"Danielius Tanneriensis." Original undated illustration created for friends in San Diego County, California, circa 1940. Watercolor on board. 356x293 mm; 14x11 1/2 inches. Signed in lower right margin (faded). Tipped to window matte.

Additional Details

A large, fanciful creature named after the friend for whom the drawing was apparently executed (one presumed Daniel Tanner). The two trees in the background are labeled "Arbor Cliffensis" and "Arbor Eleanorus." Pencil sketches in portions of the background reveal Seuss's working process. Clifford (a master horticulturalist) and Eleanor Tanner were friends of Seuss in California from the 1940s on.
