"California Dilemma." Colored pencil and graphite on a sheet of Seuss's printed leaderhead, 1958. 172x157 mm; 6 3/4x6 1/4 inches, on 10 1/2x7 1/4-inch sheet. Tipped to matte board. Not signed but accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed by Seuss, dated January 11, 1958, describing the creation of the drawing for its recipient, along with an additional Autograph Letter Signed. Framed.

Additional Details

The typed letter playfully describes the "California Dilemma, with 18-pronged horns" and listing its characteristics, sightings in the greater Connecticut Valley, and closing with "Aside from this, all I can say is that the horns of one dilemma are no more comfortable than the horns of any other" (La Jolla, California, 11 January 1958, 1 page). Also included is an Autograph Letter Signed "Dr. Seuss" to a different recipient stating: ". . . this may (or may not) answer your questions. If not, it poses still another dilemma." ([San Diego, California, 23 March 1979], 1 page, 8vo, on stationery with printed image of The Cat in the Hat onto which Seuss has drawn in ink and purple crayon, a large 5-pronged horn emanating from his brow.
