Additional Details

Frantisek Drtikol's powerful nude studies drew from the emerging modernist idiom. He deftly photographed models at unusual angles and employed dramatic lighting and special props. His work reached its apogee in the period between the wars. An accomplished series of pigment prints--each one unique--underscores his pivotal role in the modernist movement, one that merged a new vision of photographic representation with a powerful new formulation of womanhood.

In the 1920s, Drtikol's fascination with the female form led him to experiment with a photographic process known as the pigment print. Unlike gelatin silver black-and-white photographs, pigment prints are noteworthy for their rich saturated tones and relief-like layers of velvety blacks, which add to an overall painterly effect.
