Additional Details

first edition, wrappered issue, inscribed by du bois to noted author, historian and literary critic Van Wyck Brooks on the front free end-paper. Sub-titled "The Story of my 83rd Birthday," the present work forms the last portion of Du Bois''s autobiography, and is vital in understanding Du Bois. In 1951, at the height of the McCarthy anti-communist hysteria, du Bois was labeled a communist because of his involvement with Peace Information Center, which the HUAC considered a communist "fellow traveler" group. Du Bois was cleared of this charge and chronicles the incident in this book. In 1961, at the age of 93, W. E. B. Du Bois announced that he was joining the Communist Party.
