"second edition"though properly speaking the first edition, second printing, published only six months after the first. There were in all three printings in 1903 alone. It is likely given the publishing norms of the day, that there were probably no more than 500 to 750 copies in the first printing and not that many more in the second. Du Bois's collection of essays went through nineteen more editions by 1938.
