"Stefan Mihal" is both an alter ego and a doppelganger for Michals himself. Like Michals, Stefan Mihal was born in 1932 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, a steel town near Pittsburgh, and like Michals he comes from a working-class Slovak family. However, there the resemblance ends. "He is everything I am not. He's the guy I never became," Michals said. "If we ever met on the street we would collide like matter and anti-matter."
