First state of the map. From Volume 1 of Dell'Arcano del Mare. The map is an early example of the Blancus/Moreria type with some amendments, ". . . the most substantial deviation from its predecessors is the expanded depiction of the southern part of Ezo"--Walter 31. The second state of the map, appearing in 1661, has the addition of the letter "L" and a number at the bottom of the cartouche. This copy is unquestionably a first state example, but it does have a curious manuscript addition of the number "20" in the cartouche. Cortazzi, pl. 65.
