DUILIO CAMBELLOTTI (1876-1960) ROMA. 1911.
77 3/4x39 inches. Stab. Dott. E. Chappuis, Bologna.
Condition B+: minor discoloration and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired tears in margins; restored loss in lower left corner. Two sheets.
Cambelloti began his graphic career designing posters for exhibitions, fairs and theaters. Ultimately, however, he began specializing in movie posters. Here, promoting an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Kingdom of Italy, Cambelotti evokes the glory and power of the ancient Roman Empire. He depicts three eagles (the historic symbol of the Roman army) atop a pillar bearing the initials SPQR [The Senate and People of Rome], and the date that Rome was founded. The trio of majestic birds are overlooking a paved road, which is likely the Via Appia. The poster exists in different languages and at least two different sizes. This is the larger, Italian version.
