Blaney (1865-1944) was an architect, painter and noted antique collector born in Salem, Massachusetts. After marrying an heiress to the Eastern Steamship Company, he purchased Ironbound Island, near the social and artstic epicenter of Bar Harbor, Maine. Artists that visited Blaney's private island included Childe Hassam, Frank W. Benson, William MacGregor Paxton and even John Singer Sargent, who produced a group of paintings and sketches during one of his stays there in 1922.
