Limited edition, folio; number 12 of 25 total copies, signed by Dater in ink on the title; with a foreword by the artist and an introduction by Jack Welpott; including 10 silver gelatin prints mounted on large cardstock leaves, each signed and dated by the Dater in pencil in the lower blank margin at recto, with the printed Witkin-Berley portfolio label to verso of each, inked with the corresponding plate and portfolio numbers; all loosely contained in the original red leather sleeved chemise and slipcase, the former silver-stamped, with a small mounted vignette photograph of Dater to front, and a metal handle to outside (final mount bowed, minor reddish residue from case to final mount verso, a few mount edges, and a tiny bit to title corners; portfolio case rubbed, a few scratches to lower panel, vignette photograph starting); photographs measuring 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. to 12 7/8 x 9 7/8 in.; cardstock mounts: 20 x 16 in.
Born in Hollywood during the Golden Age of American cinema, Dater's photography is profoundly influenced by the drama of black-and-white movies. Her father owned a small movie theater when Dater awas young, and she became so immersed in the medium of film that, "movies became the prism through which she viewed the world." After attending UCLA for art and San Francisco State for photography, Dater joined the west coast school of photography that included Ansel Adams, Edward and Brett Weston, Wynn Bullock, and Imogen Cunningham. Dater credits Cunningham as one of her most important influences. Cunningham was one of only a few photographers in the community whose work primarily focused on portraiture. The present portfolio is a wonderful sampling of Dater's most famous work.
