Davy, who coined the term "laughing gas," was an active researcher at the Pneumatic Institution, where he discovered the effects of nitrous oxide when inhaled. In addition to the euphoric properties produced by inhalation of the gas, Davy also speculated about its potential use as a surgical anesthetic. His work also inspired the romatic poets who had a keen interest in reaching heightened states and experiencing feelings of euphoria.
