Exotic vignettes of Java and Bali surround a central image of the S.S. Melchior Treub, inviting travelers to Holland's colonial destinations in the Dutch East Indies. The K.P.M, or the Dutch Royal Packet Navigation Co., operated from 1888 to 1966 in the East Indies, and extended service to Australia, New Zealand and Africa later. The Dutch first opened a tourist bureau in Batavia (present-day Jakarta) in 1908, and its scope was extended to Bali in 1914. A weekly K.P.M steamship from Java to Bali wasn't established until 1924. The printer of this poster, G. Kolff & co., was one of the most famous booksellers and printers of the Dutch East Indies, in Jakarta.
