The Caledonian Railway was one of the first major Scottish railroad companies. Founded in 1843, it absorbed several smaller rail companies later in the 19th century. The company's goal was to link local rail networks with the railroads in England, thus providing a direct link between Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. In 1923, the company became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway. This image is one of at least five posters of female golfers promoting "the picturesque golf courses served by the Caledonian Railway," each one playing on "The True Line," the colloquial name for the railway company. This popular image also appeared on glass paperweights and wooden signs.
