Dickens, Charles (1812-1870)
Oliver Twist, a fine first edition in original cloth.

London: Richard Bentley, 1838.

First edition, first issue in book form, three octavo volumes; half-titles and advertisements present in volumes I and III; illustrated with three etched frontispieces and 21 plates by George Cruishank, including the scarce "Fireside Plate" in volume III; in a plum cloth variant binding, horizontally ribbed and without the publisher's imprint at spine foot, boards blind-stamped with an arabesque, spine gilt-lettered, yellow coated endpapers (fresh interior, with only three repaired marginal tears to page 189 in vol. I and two plates; recased, with small repairs at corners, gilt lettering faded on vol. III); together in a custom red cloth chemise and full morocco pull-off box; 7 7/8 x 4 3/4 in.

A remarkably preserved copy of Dickens's famous second title in which he diverges from his preceding Pickwick Papers by focusing on a young protagonist.

Eckel, pp. 59-63; Podeschi/Gimbel A27; Sadleir 696; Smith 4.
