First edition in parts, first issue, 20 monthly parts in 19 octavo booklets; illustrated with a frontispiece, vignette title, and 38 etched plates by H. K. Browne; original wrappers, edges uncut (plates marginally browned in parts V and XIV, evenly browned in part XVI; some creasing to text leaves throughout; most wrappers with neat repairs to spine and extremities, a few soiled but especially the last, chipping as usual); contained in a morocco-backed slipcase and two chemises; 9 x 5 1/2 in.

Additional Issue Points: with the first state frontispiece reading "100/P" on the signpost and signed "Phiz fecit"; lacking a few pages of the advertiser in about 5 or 6 parts, some advertisements at rear appear in a later part or in a different order than where called for by Hatton & Cleaver, lacking the rare "Neatly bound in cloth" slip in part VII; lower wrappers supplied in parts X, XV, and XIX/XX; part XIX/XX is stamped with "With compliments of the Publisher" on the front wrapper.
