Document, France, May 1223.

Single leaf parchment document, docketed on verso, old folds, with the remnants of green and pink silk ties; written in a secretarial hand in brown ink, seven lines of text describing a legal transaction between Marguerite de Roye (d. 1253) and the nascent Joyenval Abbey, established by her father, Barthélemy de Roye (1170-1237) in 1224; regarding her gift of a villa called Foreste, and requiring the nuns to take over the rent on her father's death; this gift would have been a fundamental bequest at the beginning of the Abbey's history; it was set on fire in 1346 but survived until the French Revolution and its total destruction in the 1790s; it now exists only as a ruin on a golf course; 8 3/4 x 5 1/4 in.
